Melanotan II (often abbreviated as MT-2) is a synthetic peptide that is an analog of the naturally occurring hormone α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH).

Melanotan II was originally developed at the University of Arizona during the early 1990s as a potential agent for the prevention of skin cancer.

The idea was to create a peptide that could stimulate the production of melanin in the skin without exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, thereby providing a protective tan before UV exposure.

Mechanism of Action:

Melanotan II works by stimulating the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the coloration of skin and hair. This is achieved by activating specific receptors known as melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R, which is involved in the pigmentation process.
